BAAUM © CARTA REICHEN ET ROBERT ASSOCIÉS is a forum for reflection, dedicated to designing sustainable solutions in architecture and urban planning. BAAUM fosters cross-cutting thinking around territories, functions, situations and technical expertise.
BAAUM offers a specific approach to architecture and urban planning that focuses on adapting spaces to human, social and environmental needs. This process promotes sustainable architecture that respects heritage while responding to contemporary challenges.
The origin of the name BAAUM is rooted in questions of temporality and societal issues: Bureau d’Architectes Associés et d’Urbanistes des Mutations. The acronym reflects the practice’s ability to build - BAU - and its work articulated around landscape and trees - BAAUM - long part of the practice’s DNA, and an organisational structure that constantly adapts to evolving needs in architecture and urban planning.
Reality and
Future Vision
Our approach combines hands-on practice, informed by tangible built outcomes, with independent research. This enables us to optimise designs, streamline processes, and deliver agile, resilient projects that can adapt to change. It also allows us to envision a more equitable, inclusive, and environmentally responsible future, where sustainability is not merely a technical target, but a way of life.
To stimulate creativity and broaden our horizons, we embrace cross-disciplinary thinking, structured around territories, uses, situations, and technical expertise. This perspective enables us to propose an architecture that is human, social, and environmental, rooted in contemporary challenges while respecting heritage and local specificities. We believe in an architecture that adapts to users’ needs, values what already exists, and anticipates change rather than merely enduring it.

Dialogue
to innovate
BAAUM is also a place for exchange and dialogue. Through workshops, professional gatherings, and collaborations, we share knowledge and bring in new perspectives. These interactions enrich our collective thinking and reinforce our conviction: innovation is born from the diversity of ideas and openness to others.

An acronym,
two meanings
The acronym BAAUM embodies our dual identity: that of a practice of associate architects and urbanists for transition, whose ability to build (the BAU) is well established, and that of a deeper reflection on landscape and trees (the BAUM), symbols of our rootedness in nature and our commitment to integrated, sustainable architecture. The name also reflects our organisational structure, constantly evolving to respond to the changing needs of architecture and urban design.
Explore,
question,
test
Our research knows no boundaries. We constantly explore new avenues, while drawing on a strong sustainability expertise structured around four fundamental pillars : Reusing territories, by transforming and enhancing existing environments rather than neglecting them. Reusing spaces, by extending the life of buildings and preserving their memory. Reusing materials, by prioritising bio-based materials and resources from the circular economy. Reusing energy, through the frugal and efficient management of resources.
Régénérative
vision
BAAUM is a brand that embodies an evolving, regenerative vision of architecture and urban design. We do not merely build: we shape territories and uses to create flexible, adaptive spaces capable of evolving with their time. This philosophy is grounded in three key principles : Heritage as a resource, by prioritising refurbishment over demolition and respecting the history of places. The environment as a design driver, by integrating durable materials, bioclimatic solutions, and circular practices. People at the heart of our approach, by designing spaces that are flexible, inclusive, and enduring, responding to users’ real needs.
Holistic approach,
sustainable projects
BAAUM embodies a comprehensive and sustainable vision of architecture and urban design, aimed at meeting the needs of territories while respecting their history. Our adaptability and the diversity of our projects demonstrate the flexibility and reversibility of our approach.
BAAUM thus stands as a model for thinking about urban transformation projects, combining innovation, environmental responsibility, and user wellbeing.
Built projects such as La Fabriq in Saint-Ouen, the Lyon Tech La Doua Campus, and La Passerelle in Marseille illustrate this philosophy. They show how our thinking is translated into lively, enduring spaces that are adaptable to future needs, where each project becomes an opportunity to rethink cities and territories in a responsible, forward-looking way.
Philosophy of
transformation
BAAUM embodies a new, responsible and committed architectural ethos, where transformation takes precedence over tabula rasa. Each project is conceived as a subtle balance between what exists and innovation, aligned in harmony with its social, environmental, and historical context. Sustainability is not reduced to a purely technical response: it unfolds as a measured, meaningful action, able to anticipate change, adapt over time, and regenerate territories.
In constant evolution, BAAUM redefines the markers of contemporary architecture. This approach is not simply a shift, but an amplification of the practice’s founding principles: hybrid programmes, the strengthening of local supply chains, and constructive frugality. BAAUM is an impulse towards a living architecture, capable of adapting, reinventing itself, and regenerating spaces for future generations, placing people, the environment, and meaning at the heart of every project.
